From not even being eligible to being invited! :)

So before I get to sharing the news, let me talk about a film that is close to my heart - Jersey (2019). Undoubtedly it is my favorite Telugu film of all time. It is the story of a 36-year-old man who is considered a loser by society as he abruptly leaves his passion - Cricket when he was 26 due to some reasons. His 6-year-old son is the only person who never judges him and treats him as his hero. To maintain the self-respect his son has for him, he gets back to his bat after a decade to prove that love has no boundaries and he is not a loser.

And in this film, there is one scene in which every person who has been away from success for a while and suddenly sees it after ages can relate to. Please search 'Jersey Train Station Scene' on YouTube (or rather watch this amazing film to experience this scene with momentum). After being selected for the Hyderabad Ranji cricket team, he silently drives to a rail station and screams out loud when a train passes to express his happiness. I have had 1 such moment in the past on Feb 14th, 2023. And I feel like I had it again on September 25th, 2024, when I got an unexpected invite.

Today's story is about the disheartened 22-year-old version of mine who was really looking forward to making it into the Stanford Energy program for his PhD under one of the really amazing professors. He made sure his research experience suited this particular lab. But little did he know that due to certain program requirements, he was not eligible for this particular program or would have almost 0% chance had he even applied.

PhD application process is a tiresome process where one has to collect a limited number of recommendations from every professor and applying for a place that is almost a sure rejection might not be really worth given that all these applications are expensive for a middle-class Indian student who has already spent a lot on his tuition for his Master's program.

4 years later, he got invited to give a guest seminar at the same lab. What can be more thrilling for someone who is invited to give a guest seminar at a top school in a place that he loves the most? :)
